The World of Dante is a digital humanities project aimed at showcasing Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The website features all three parts of the epic poem, and also includes illustrations, maps, charts, and music related to the poem.
Found in the “about” section, the sources for the project are Allen Mandelbaum’s translation done in the early 1980s. When clicking on each image on the site, a new window opens up and has more detailed information about the image, including the source. Any musical excerpt was recorded by Zephyrus, Central Virginia’s Early Music group, which can be found on the “music” page.
The actual poem can be accessed through the larger buttons at the top of the website. Each part of the poem has its own landing page, and once on the landing page, a dropdown menu labeled “Canto” can be accessed to find each chapter of the larger parts. The actual poem is displayed with both the original Italian text side-by-side next to the translated version in English.
This copy of the Comedy that this website uses was edited through XML, which, as stated in the “about” section, is unlike other versions of this poem presented online. Also, there are links to the different characters, places, and deities mentioned within the poem and they lead to different pages to help describe them. In some cases, when Dante is being a bit ambiguous, the links will still appear. To clarify and quote from the “about” section: “Hence a character such as Farinata has been tagged not only when he is mentioned by his proper name, but also when Dante refers to him as quell’altro magnanimo (“that great-hearted one”) (Inf.10.73).” Also in the “about” section, it includes with which sources the timeline was created.
