Week 1: Intro, what is/are the humanities? How do they connect to digital technology?

Tuesday 1/26

Today will be an all-class Zoom meeting! Use the Zoom information posted on D2L to join our meeting and learn about class assignments and expectations. We’ll talk about the schedule for the rest of the semester during this meeting!

If you miss it, a recording of our call will be posted below.

Once our call is complete, finish the two flipgrid discussions below to share your definitions of “humanities” and “digital” and help me plan our introduction to the “Digital Humanities” on Thursday.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember to sign up for flipgrid with the “Microsoft Account” and use your @wcupa.edu email address. Joining with a non-wcupa email account won’t let you access our class discussions!)

Note: Some folks are reporting trouble trying to use the flipgrid with the embed above. If you’re one of them try this direct link to the flipgrid (and be sure to use Firefox or Chrome, rather than Safari)

Completing these flipgrids and the “digital humanities definitions quizzes” below will satisfy your participation requirement for the week. I’ll review your responses as I build my intro to the digital humanities video lecture below.

Thursday 1/28

Before you watch the mini-lectures below, read “Digital Keys for Unlocking Humanities’ Riches” AND “What is Digital Humanities and What’s it Doing in English Departments.” These readings will make the video mini-lectures make a lot more sense!

Mini Lecture 1: What are the humanities?

In the mini-lecture below, I respond to your definitions of “the humanities” and offer my own (NOTE: These Video mini-lectures will be recorded and uploaded after I review your flipgrids on Wednesday, January 27).

Once you’ve watched this video lecture, you’ll be ready to take the humanities definition quiz on D2L. (NOTE: D2L won’t allow me to direct link to the quiz! That link should take you to our course homepage. Then choose “quizzes” from the top menu and then “humanities definition quiz” to take the quiz.)

Mini Lecture 2: What is digital?

In the mini-lecture below, I respond to your definitions of “digital” and offer my own (NOTE: These Video mini-lectures will be recorded and uploaded after I review your flipgrids on Wednesday, January 27).

Mini Lecture 3: What are the Digital Humanities?

In this video mini-lecture I bring together the definitions above to show how some example projects demonstrate what we do in the digital humanities. (NOTE: These Video mini-lectures will be recorded and uploaded after I review your flipgrids on Wednesday, January 27).

Final Tasks for Week 1

Once you’ve completed the mini lectures and quizzes above, log in to our blog and complete weekly response blog 1.

If you don’t have a login for our blog, you probably need to fill out the form giving me your preferred username. I won’t post that form here, because I don’t want spammers to use it, but you should check your email for a message from me with a link to the form.

That completes week one of our class! See you next week to learn about Distant Reading.
